Top 5 Benefits of planting trees on your property
Planting trees around your property offers a variety of benefits, primarily improving the appearance of your landscaping, raising the value of your property and giving your home additional curb appeal. Their advantages, however, go way beyond that. The following are the top five advantages of planting trees on your property:
Improved health and
stress reduction
It’s long been known that being surrounded by nature is advantageous for both the mind and the body. But you don’t even need to step foot outside to obtain the benefits of nature—simply looking through a window at trees outside has been shown to lower stress and anxiety levels and enhance the overall wellness of people. Trees can also operate as natural filters for pollution.
Increases Property Value
Beautiful green trees are considered to be a valuable asset for potential homebuyers. They are seeking properties with trees and other foliage and are prepared to pay a premium for that. Even if you are not planning on selling your home, having a lovely landscaped lawn with shady trees provides exceptional curb appeal for your property.
Significant savings on energy
Planting trees may help to save money on energy costs. During the colder winter months, trees can provide a barrier to keep strong winds from reaching your home, reducing heating costs. In the summer, trees provide shade to help keep your home cooler.
Lower Taxes and Flood Protection
Water runoff may cause flooding and property damage, but trees can catch water runoff and help to lessen the intensity of floods. The dense organic layers and the roots of a tree can slow the flow of water and help it more gradually soak into the ground, which will reduce erosion and allow you to retain your soil.
An Important Component of a Healthy Environment
Trees not only help save soil and water, but they can also manage temperature extremes, store carbon and promote wildlife habitat.

Professional Tree Planting Services in Wilmington, NC
It may be tempting to take on a DIY tree planting project on your property, but in the long term, it might not be good for the longevity and health of the tree. Transferring seedlings to your landscaping requires a lot of precision and care. When our team of professional arborists plants a tree on your property, we will help you evaluate which trees have the greatest chance for success by checking several essential factors: space allocation, regional pests and diseases, local weather and temperature and soil conditions.
Here are some of the basic concepts we use to achieve success when planting trees:
- Soil Test and Preparation: We test both the chemical and physical properties of the soil where the tree will be planted. It’s also necessary to check for debris and non-soil particles that may come from construction like concrete, cement, etc. Preparing good drainage for the soil to help your trees survive and thrive is important. If we find that the pH level or nutrients are off during soil sampling, we may suggest adjusting those with the use of fertilizers.
- Organic Components: Your soil should contain 10 – 20% organic matter, like compost, to improve the soil’s nutrients and capacity to hold water.
- Best Time to Plant Trees: Though it is possible to plant most seedlings from containers or wrapped in burlap throughout the year, we suggest planting your trees after the last leaves fall during the fall season. That’s because the roots of trees and other plants will continue to work even through the dormant or cold seasons. As there is little demand for nutrients at the top of the tree, the growth’s focus will be at the roots, giving the tree an excellent opportunity to settle in for spring.
- Digging to Plant: If your tree is planted at the wrong depth, it won’t get enough water to help it establish its systems and flourish. It’s important to not add soil on top of the root ball, but instead, to build up the soil beside it. This process permits oxygen to reach the roots of the tree through the upper surface of the soil. The hole that has been dug for the tree should also be wide enough to allow the roots to spread out as they grow.
- Filling the Hole: After we plant the tree, we will fill the hole back up with the same soil we took out while digging. But before pushing the soil back in, we will break down all solid pieces that may remain, because as larger pieces, they could create air pockets around the roots that could hinder the system’s establishment and growth.
- Mulching: When we spread 2 to 4 inches of organic mulch made of wood chips or shredded wood around your newly planted tree, it will help to insulate the soil around the tree’s roots, and will help to discourage foot traffic, keep away power tools and improve the soil as it decays.
